Discover Haebangchon, Seoul’s Hidden Hipster Neighborhood
Haebangchon – A Street of Culture with a Complex History
Haebangchon, located in Yongsan, Seoul, is known today as a cultural district. However, it hasn’t always held this identity. During the Japanese colonial era, the area was used as part of the Chosen Shrine grounds and served as a shooting range for the 20th division of the Japanese army.
After Korea's liberation in 1945, the area gradually became known as "Haebangchon" — literally meaning "Liberation Village" — as it was settled by displaced Koreans who had fled from the North. In the late 2000s, as nearby Itaewon gained popularity among locals and foreigners alike, Haebangchon also started attracting more foot traffic and attention.
A Popular Photo and Cafe Spot
Haebangchon is a favorite spot among young people, especially for photography. Even on weekday afternoons, you'll find locals snapping pictures and visiting the many stylish cafes and restaurants that give the area its laid-back charm.
You can even spot Namsan Mountain from here, and it's just a 30-minute walk to the famous N Seoul Tower — another reason why visitors love this area.
Where Is Haebangchon?
The Haebangchon area includes two main zones:
Original Haebangchon: Yongsan-dong 2-ga, Yongsan-gu, Seoul
Shinheung Market area: 95-9, Shinheung-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul
It’s about a 25–30 minute walk from either Sookmyung Univ. Station (Line 4) or Noksapyeong Station (Line 6). However, because the area has many steep hills, it’s recommended to take a taxi or hop on the Yongsan 02 (용산02) village bus.
How to take the Yongsan 02 bus:
Catch it from Exit 5 of Sookmyung Univ. Station – the destination is Haebangchon Five-Way Intersection (해방촌 오거리).
Huam-dong 108 Stairs – A Sunset Spot Nearby
Just a 10-minute walk from Shinheung Market, the 108 Stairs of Huam-dong is a scenic spot known for its beautiful sunset views.
If you’re heading downhill, make sure to stop by. While there is an elevator available, walking down the stairs offers a charming and memorable experience.
